"The Empress, I'm sort of her...uhhh...personal entertainer. I'm sort of an artist," he explained awkwardly.

"Oh!" I mumbled, fingering the patterns on the bed. Well that explains that. I realized at that moment that I still had his shirt. And it was bloody. "I'm terribly sorry; your shirt is probably rather repulsive now...it must be so very cold for you..." I apologized in a hurry.

He laughed a little. "No, it's fine. I'm used to it," he smiled at her.

"Well...thank you." I looked him straight in the eye for the first time and got weird little goosebumps.

"Oh, you're welcome. I'm just glad that you're okay," he said, breaking their eye contact with a grin.

I smiled, then looked down and pulled at a thread on my dress, realizing that it was still the fancy gown from the ceremony. "I imagine it would be lonely in here all by yourself..." I said softly.

"Two," I said with a smile. "Well, I guess almost three...but the third isn't technically adopted but he's basically part of our family anyway." I added, thinking of Caspian.

"I..." I faltered, trying to think of what to say about Susan. "Technically yes, one. And two who are as good as, and probably will be when they end up marrying my brothers." I started out laughing at the thought of Cam and Lil marrying Ed and Peter, but then I thought about how I might never see them again. And how I probably wouldn't ever see Susan again. For the first time, I was glad of the darkness. I didn't want to be thought of as a crybaby, but tears were in my eyes.

"What's so funny?" he asked, enjoying the sound of her laugh. It had been a while since he'd heard laughing.

"Oh, each one is madly in love with one of my brothers." I said, my tone cheerful once again.
